History

21st Century

The beginning of the 21st century brought new milestones for the Drac de Vilafranca. In 2000, La Maison des Géants of the city of Ath (Belgium) commissioned a copy of the Drac de Vilafranca, recognising its importance as a figure in European festive tradition.

In 2006, the artist Jordi Grau from Terrassa built a replica of the Drac financed by the surplus from the 2005 Festa Major. The replica was presented on 27 August at the Palau Baltà and that day a joint dance was performed by both dragons, the original and the copy, before a large audience. Since that year, the original Drac only comes out on 30 August (Sant Fèlix), while the replica performs on 29 and 31 August, allowing the Drac to be present on all the central days of the Festa Major.

The year 2024 has been especially important for Vilafranca's festive heritage: the Drac de Vilafranca has been declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN), the highest institutional recognition that Catalonia grants to its cultural heritage, consolidating the projection and protection of a figure that has been part of the identity of Vilafranca del Penedès for centuries.
